Meal Kit Delivery Company Implements Automated Case Erectors to Improve Packaging Process

As packaged meal kits became more and more popular, one successful company needed to find a way to improve its packaging process. The integrator they worked with came to Hughes Enterprises in need of case erectors.

Challenges

As a leader in the meal kit delivery industry, our client ships nearly a quarter million boxes out each week. Their original end-of-line packaging process used limited automation. Much of the process was manual.

In designing a new packaging line, they needed case erectors that could keep up with their large throughput volume. The boxes would need to be assembled so they could first be packed with the protein part of the meal kit, a divider layer, and then the “kit” part, which included dry, non-frozen ingredients and vegetables.

When the client invested in automating more of their packaging line, they were able to greatly improve their process.

Solutions

We looked at what this client in the meal kit delivery industry needed, and we decided that implementing two Combi 2-EZ HS fully automatic case erectors would be the way to go.

The incredible features of the 2-EZ HS include:

  • Opens up to 20 cases per minute
  • Ergonomically designed
  • Stainless steel design
  • EZ-load walk-in case magazine
  • Tool-less changeovers take less than 3 minutes
  • EZ side belt drive can seal single- to triple-wall cases
  • Hinged case hold-down plate allows for easy tapehead removal
  • High speed 2-inch tapehead applies tape with efficiency and precision

So, what does this all mean for the meal kit delivery company?

Results

The two fully automatic case erectors sit side-by-side and feed the same line. Our client has increased throughput of packaged meal kits. The machines now help package about half of what is shipped out.

They also decreased manual labor for their packaging process, so employees can be more effective elsewhere in the warehouse. Using these efficient, easy-to-use machines from Combi provides the added benefit of less downtime during changeovers.

In the end, our client is saving time and money while keeping up with their growing business.

Conclusion

Keeping up with a growing business can be demanding. By automating much of their packaging process, this meal kit delivery company can put more of their energy towards other aspects of their business. The Combi 2-EZ HS case erectors ensure they are in good hands.

Our partnership with this client began in early 2019. Now, we’re working on automating more of the processes in another one of their distribution centers. We’re also creating a machine that will fill a need for a specific part of the kitting process. It’s in testing phases now, but we see a lot of potential for it in this industry and others.
